Craft and Technology

چکیده
This presentation seeks to contextualise current work by makers using new technologies by discussing ways in which technology can be defined and the theoretical frameworks within which these definitions sit. It will briefly highlight some of the common ways in which we discuss technology and technological mediation, and relate these beliefs to particular characterisations of technology. This will include a 'conservative' characterisation which is often championed by computer scientists and technologists and based on rigidly quantifiable aspects of technology and its use. A 'critical' characterisation will also be briefly discussed, based on the work of Martin Heidegger and Tony Fry this characterisation seeks to question how the use of technologies mediate our experience of 'being'. A pragmatic characterisation of technology will be proposed (based to some degree on John Dewey's work) which considers technologies as 'extensions of man' (sic). The implications of this characterisation will be discussed and related to notions of contemporary craft practice and creativity. The conclusion will discuss the implications of taking a pragmatic position when considering the use of new technologies by makers and cite examples where relevant.

Analysis of hydrofoil craft in regular and irregular waves
In this article, the most important specifications of hydrofoil floats, i.e. their seakeeping under regular and irregular waves under different encounter angles of wave, has been investigated. Numerical simulation has been done using STAR CCM+ software. Surge, heave, roll and pitch motions are kept free at the same time and their effects on each other are taken into account. USV01 model, whose ...
متن کاملNumerical Hydrodynamic Performance of the Stepped Planing Craft and Its Step Height Effect (RESEARCH NOTE)
One of the most efficient methods of reducing drag on planing craft is the use of transverse step on the bottom of a hull. Applying steps on the hull reduces the contact area with water and as a result, it reduces drag of the craft. Planing craft are able to have one or two transverse steps. In this paper, numerical hydrodynamic performance of the stepped planing craft and its step height effec...
متن کاملConsidering Craftsmanship
Craft involves the application of human skill and invested time. Some have argued technology has undermined human expertise by replacing craftwork with automation, disposing of human ingenuity and proficiency. Can new technologies integrate skill, materials and labor with the products of craft? How does technology affect the use and significance of the crafted artifacts? Conversely, how does th...

an art. However, throughout this century the scientific emphasis has been predominant. Technology has been considered as being applied science and craft as being applied art. In medicine we may consider clinical practice as both the applied science and also the applied art of medicine since it combines both the technology and the craft. (Fig. 1). Teaching or researching the craft of medicine wi...
متن کاملFoil Application to Reduce Resistance of Catamaran under High Speeds and Different Operating Conditions
Today, researchers exploit hybrid craft more than they used to be. The main reason is that they need to high speed as well as extra portability. For instance, a famous hybrid craft is named Hysucat, was designed through the combination of catamaran and hydrofoil. Catamarans, a type of multihull boats, have always considered by designers because of their simultaneous supply of high speed and sta...
